Exams for IIBLC® certification
Today Lean IIBLC® exams are recognised as an objective and independent tool to attest that the Lean training of a professional is up to date and in line with the international standard of knowledge (BOK). After having passed the Lean IIBLC® exams, the participant will obtain an international Lean certification.
Since 2010, more than 300 professionals have obtained the IIBLC® certification in Italy.
IIBLC®, International Independent Board for Lean Certification (www.iiblc.org), is a non-profit organisation that aims at providing an objective and independent certification of expertise and knowledge of the Lean methodology for companies and individuals, and becoming an international point of reference thanks to a standard certification system.
IIBLC® was created in 2009 and today administers Lean certification in more than 10 countries in 4 continents.
Advance Operations Management School SRL administers the exams in Italy and Switzerland.
There are 3 levels of IIBLC® certification:
- Certified Green Belt in Lean (CGBL)
- Certified Black Belt in Lean (CBBL)
- Certified Champion in Lean (CChL)
The Lean certification programme is built on a step-by-step approach which means that, in order to achieve the Champion certification, the candidate must first achieve the Green and Black Belt certifications.

> Exam preparation
There are 2 methods to prepare for an IIBLC® exam:
- 1. SELF STUDY
This method is aimed at those who already have experience in Lean. The types of experience required depend on the level of certification you want to obtain (Green, Black, or Champion). We recommend purchasing the BOK (Book of Knowledge), written by the IIBLC® Content Committee, that represents an important reference guide for exam preparation. A. Purchase the BOK at the price of 36 Euros (VAT and delivery costs included)
B.Purchase the Green Belt Exam Diagnostic On-line Tool consisting of:> 40 Diagnostic questions to find gaps in your knowledge, including comments and explanations
> 80 Exam Simulation questions that simulate a Green Belt IIBLC® exam to be taken at the end of the Self‑Study preparation.

> Description of the 3 certifications
- CERTIFIED GREEN BELT in LEAN (CGBL)
aimed at: Consultants and frontline Managers
aim: to learn the basic concepts and techniques of Lean and become a member of an improvement team
The exam includes:
- theory section – a written multiple-choice test (paper & pencil format) of 80 questions. The candidate will have 3 hours to complete the exam. The pass mark for the exam is a score of at least 70%.
- CERTIFIED BLACK BELT in LEAN (CBBL)
aimed at: / Consultants, Middle Management and Future Leaders of Lean transformation teams with Black Belt skills
aim: knowing Lean tools and techniques and the introduction to Human Skills;
The candidate can take the exam only after having achieved Green Belt certification.
The exam includes:
- theory section- a written multiple choice test (paper & pencil format) of 60 questions. The candidate will have 3 hours to complete the exam. The pass mark for the exam is a score of at least 70%.
- practical section – a written report which will show the candidate’s practical skills. The report must be sent directly to IIBLC® within a year of having passed the theory exam and must be countersigned by the group manager of the company where the project was carried out. The signature of the manager authorises the IIBLC® committee, if it so desires, to undertake an evaluation. The report will be evaluated by one or more members of the Content Committee. The report will be sent directly to IIBLC® after having passed the theory section and will be assessed by one or more members of the Council. The pass mark of this final part of the exam is a score of at least 65%.
- CERTIFIED CHAMPION in LEAN (CChL)
aimed at: Higher Management
aim: knowing tools and skills specific to some fields such as: production, administration, logistics, health and safety. Preparing a Lean plan. Becoming a company or group Lean Manager.
The candidate can take the exam only after having achieved the Green Belt and Black Belt certification.
The exam includes:
- theory section – a written multiple choice test (paper & pencil format) of 60 questions. The candidate will have 3 hours to complete the exam. The pass mark required is a score of at least 70%.
- practical section – a written report which will show the candidate’s practical skills. The report must be sent directly to IIBLC® within a year of having passed the theory exam and must be countersigned by the group manager of the company where the project was carried out.
